Event description

Description

Your organisation is growing fast and you’ve put a lot of time and effort into onboarding the best talent: You know you’ve got high performers.

But as your team expands, you’re starting to notice the appearance of unproductive behaviours: a lack of accountability and respect for each other’s opinions on the one hand, or fear of speaking up on the other. People say things like:

“It was pretty clear to me what we agreed – and then they went off and did precisely the opposite.”

“He doesn’t listen – he has his own objectives and just fights his corner rather than engaging in the wider picture.”

“She’s the boss; if I disagree I’m hardly going to challenge her in front of others, am I?”

“I don’t know why I was at that meeting – I couldn’t get a word in edgeways.” Or, “I don’t know why he came to that meeting – he said nothing.”

“Meetings are such a waste of time now. They used to be fun and inspiring – now everything is done by rote – stale and no one says what they really think.”

You’re not the only one

In fact, these behaviours are all too common in fast-growing teams. It’s what you, as a leader, do in this situation that will make the difference.

Fail to address the fundamental cause of these behaviours and you risk creating a culture that is at best ineffective – and at worst, dysfunctional: one where you don’t just leave potential on the table – most of it never even reaches the table in the first place.

The good news is, you don’t need a different team. What you need is to create a culture where the potential of each team member individually – and of the team collectively – is unlocked.

And the Fight, Flight or Flow workshop will help you understand how to do exactly that.

How to create a high-performing culture

Wondering why all your high-performers aren’t? Why the whole seems less than the sum of the parts?

In Project Aristotle, a two-year study of what made the most successful teams in its organisation, Google determined that a sense of psychological safety is the leading determinant of a team’s performance.

Google noticed that the teams it expected to be the ‘A’ teams – the ones packed with subject matter experts – typically performed worse than what had been regarded as its ‘B’ teams.

And the key difference between the two, Google found, was psychological safety – a shared belief in the team that they wouldn’t be punished or humiliated for speaking up with ideas, questions, concerns or mistakes.

The trick, as with your growing band of high-performers is to instil psychological safety into your ‘A’ teams.

While the concept is simple and intuitive, putting it into practice with actual human beings can be tricky.

If you’d like to deepen your understanding of the fundamental factors of psychological safety and how to create it in your team then consider attending Fight, Flight or Flow: Building High-Performance Teams That Thrive Under Pressure, an experiential half-day workshop that combines neuroscience, behavioural psychology and “hand knowledge” techniques such as LEGO® Serious Play®.

You’ll learn how to:

  • identify the five primal triggers that inhibit psychological safety – for individuals and in teams – and not just mitigate them but position them as rewards
  • master your own psychology so you can be more calm and in control under pressure – and transmit that to your colleagues
  • raise the quality and authenticity of one-to-one and team interactions to establish an environment of trust and respect
  • transform feigned commitment to team goals into active engagement and accountability
  • create an environment where your people feel safe to share what they really think and know.

What clients say:

“Honestly, 30 minutes into the session, we were talking like we’d known each other all our lives...”

“Within the first hour, all preconceptions were blown away and everyone around the table engaged equally, revealing not just underlying problems but also aspects of their personalities hitherto unseen.”

"The Lego Serious Play sessions were hugely useful, both as a problem solving exercise and a team building one. As a result of the first session we had, it became painfully apparent that the communication between the Development and DevOps teams was far worse than we'd realised, and that the us-and-them gap led to throwing stuff over the fence to each other, a bit of a blame culture and some technical issues falling through the cracks between the teams. I would definitely consider using LSP again and have already recommended it to numerous colleagues."
