Luís de La Tota Bio

Luis, world renown songwriter percussionist is also a beloved teacher known for his ability to share the secrets of flamenco compás (rhythm) with endless energy, humor and grace. Born in one of the oldest Gypsy neighborhoods of Jerez de La Frontera, Spain, El Barrio de Santiago, Luis de la Tota was discovered for his talents and began his career as a percussionist at the tender age of 8. He takes his artistic name from his grandmother 'La Tota', who has been an inspiration to him since his infancy. As a percussionist (palmero), Luis tours with flamenco's top artists such as Antonio Del Pipa,Maria Del Mar Moreno, Fernando de La Morena, El Capullo, Moraito, Diego Carrasco and Angelita Vargas and has toured to the USA coast to coast several times with dancer Maria ”Chacha"Bermudez. As a Flamenco lyricist, his verses (letras) have been recorded widely and his work as a percussionist can be heard on many flamenco albums.

Estefanía La Ishi
From her beginnings at Solo Flamenco (Portland,OR) in 2003 studying with Laurena Marrone to the year she moved to Sevilla Spain (2009) Estefanía has been impassioned to seek a connection with Flamenco's roots. Years of voice apprenticing under Maestras La Chiqui de Jerez (cantaora) Ani and Coral de los Reyes as well as intense study with award winning Maestros Maria del Mar Moreno, Antonio El Pipa, Los Hermanos de La Tota and Maria Bermudez has earned Estefanía vast knowledge of the cante (song), a strength and spontaneity in her dance as well as a deep craving for creating new and exciting works. She enjoys sharing what she has learned along her personal journey through workshops and performance and is eager to assist in building Flamenco communities in the Northwest United States. Residing in Boise ID, Estefania co-directs non-profit Escuela Flamenca/Shimi Tree Flamenco Company.

ShimiTree Dance Company

Flamenco dancers guitarists and percussionists that have studied with Estefanía La Ishi and Luís de La Tota continue to deepen their skills by ‘living the dance or music’ on stage. Flamenco is rooted in spontaneity, community contribution and the freedom to express the unique force of energy that each individual carries. Estefanía and Luís strongly believe that with solid guidance from true maestros, dedication and hard work, anyone, under their guidance, can share their truth, their unique story regardless of the skill level they have reached.
