The goal of FIERCE is to expose the American University community to a staple aspect of Black LGBT culture. Ballroom is a scene that originated in the Black LGBT communities of New York City in the 1960s. Although still very popular, the culture of ball and voguing has since lost its centering in its roots. Through FIERCE, we hope to re-center these roots, as we bring awareness to the existence and humanity of Black and brown LGBT communities.
FIERCE will recreate the gay club scene, with house music and other trademark sounds of the LGBT community. The event will also host a voguing competition. Attendees can sign up to compete as teams (known as “houses”). A maximum of four houses will compete in vogue, and the remaining attendees will vote on a winner. Before the winner is announced, there will also be a special runway/modeling show, featuring the men of EyeCandyMen DC. Admission for this event is $5. Competing in vogue will cost $20 per house (or $5 for an individual). To sign up to compete in vogue, fill out the form here: https://goo.gl/forms/cPqCxPkfJ1ARgn9f2
