Event Details

Writing fiction, according to Eudora Welty, is about developing an instinct for “how to follow, how to connect, how to find in the thick of the tangle what clear line persists.” In this course we will work toward establishing narrative clarity in the chaos of creative outpourings. Through a series of readings and short writing exercises, we will hone the major elements of fiction: character, plot, point of view, setting, and style. We will also explore the less tangible ways fiction can be enhanced by metaphoric underpinnings. Students will have the opportunity to share one short story for critique in workshop, as well as practice their editorial skills through careful reading of classmates’ work. To conclude the course, we will discuss how to cultivate productive writing practices beyond our ten weeks together, as well as publication strategies. You will leave with a series of short pieces, a fully developed story, and the motivation to continue moving forward on your writing journey.
