Event description

Description

This in-town hike in Forest Park's Macleay Park features Balch creek, lush forest, the Witches Castle (also known as the Stone House), The Pittock Mansion and a view of downtown Portland and Mount Hood (on a clear day.)

The Hike: The 5 mile (out & back) hike has 900ft of elevation gain & is rated as moderate. For folks looking for a shorter hike with little elevation gain, the Witches Castle can be a good turn around spot for a total of 2 miles. Dogs are allowed on leash. This hike is kid & stroller friendly up to the Witches Castle as most of the elevation gain is beyond that & the trail narrows.

Getting There: Lower Macleay Park is in NW Portland's Willamette Heights neighborhood. Enter "Lower Macleay Park" into Google Maps. Parking is limited to a few spots that fill up quickly on the weekends & street parking. Follow the street parking rules/regulations. Tri-met buses 15 & 77 stop within blocks of Lower Macleay Park. Carpooling options are available, email Summer at: fatgirlshiking@gmail.com. Once at the park, walk under the Thurman Street bridge on the paved path past the bathrooms to the red sculpture. We will meet at the red sculpture.

Head to Fat Girls Hiking's resource page, Hiking 101, for information on what to wear/bring, trail etiquette & Leave No Trace principles.

Fat Girls Hiking's body positive group hikes are open to ALL genders, ALL sizes, ALL skill levels. We will go at a pace that feels good for everyone. No one is too slow to hike with us! We love to share our lived experiences with one another while hiking and hope to create a space where ALL feel welcome. We ask that anyone who joins our group events refrain from diet talk, body shaming or weight loss talk.
