The Siouxon Creek trail, on the south side of Mount St. Helens in Washington’s Gifford Pinchot National Forest, features two stunning waterfalls as you hike through a lush green forest of ferns, moss, lichens and towering conifers, alongside the creek with pools of emerald water.
The hike: 4 miles roundtrip with an elevation gain of 700ft. There are two waterfalls on this hike: Horsetail Creek Falls & Siouxon Falls.
Getting there: The Siouxon Creek Trailhead is 1 hour, 40 minutes from Portland. From Portland, drive east on I-84 to Exit 8 for I-205 North. Continue on I-205 across the Columbia River into Washington. Take Hwy 500, Exit 30A, 30B, 30C, stay to the left for 30B Hwy 500E. Continue for 26.2 miles through Battle Ground where Hwy 500 becomes Hwy 503. In Amboy, the road makes three sharp turns, make sure to watch for signs for Hwy 503. Just past the Mount St. Helens National Monument Headquarters, turn right on NE Healy Rd. **Set your odometer at each of the following segments since the roads are unmarked.** Continue on NE Healy Rd, which becomes Forest Road 54, for 9.2 miles to a fork, turning left on FR57. Continue on FR57 for 1.2 miles, turning left on FR 5701. Continue on FR 5701 for 3.8 miles to the parking area for the Siouxon Creek Trail just before the road ends. Google maps is a reliable source for getting to this trailhead but it’s not a bad idea to print out directions as well. There is NO fee or parking pass required to park at the trailhead. Carpool/Caravan information will be emailed to RSVP'd folks the week before the hike.
After the hike, we will be heading to a local pub for some food & drink!
