Event description

Description

In the Western Columbia River Gorge in Washington, "hikers can enjoy an easy hike around Strawberry/Hamilton Island, which is accessible from a trailhead just west of Bonneville Dam on the Washington side. The trail meanders through woods and open meadows, and features beautiful wildflowers in the spring." --via Friends of the Columbia Gorge.

Fat Girls Hiking's body positive group hikes are open to ALL genders, ALL sizes, ALL skill levels. We will go at a pace that feels good for everyone. No one is too slow to hike with us! We love to share our lived experiences with one another while hiking and hope to create a space where ALL feel welcome! We ask that anyone who joins our group events refrain from diet talk, body shaming or weight loss talk.

The Hike: This 3.2 mile loop hike will take us through meadows and woods with views of the Columbia River, Hamilton Mountain, Beacon Rock, Table Mountain and Aldrich Butte. There is an elevation gain of 150 feet. The hike is listed as easy/moderate. After the hike, we'll hit up a local watering hole for food/drinks.

Getting There: The Strawberry/Hamilton Island Trailhead is 55 minutes from Portland. There is a $1 fee (each way) to cross the Bridge of the Gods in Cascade Locks. Google Maps is a reliable source to get you to the trailhead.

Written Directions: Drive I-84 east to Exit 44 for Cascade Locks and Stevenson. After 0.4 miles, bear right for the Bridge of the Gods ($2 toll) and Stevenson. Driving over the bridge for 0.7 miles, make a left at the junction with Highway 14W for North Bonneville and Vancouver. Drive 4.2 miles and turn left onto Bonneville Drive for the town of North Bonneville. Go 0.1 miles to a junction and bear right onto W. Cascade Drive. Proceed 0.4 miles and make a left turn onto Portage Drive. It’s 0.2 miles to the trailhead parking area behind a baseball diamond.

What to Wear/Bring: Dress for the weather! Wear whatever feels good to move in. Bring a backpack for water, snacks, warm/dry clothes and any items you may need to feel comfortable while moving. We usually pack some extra clothes, footwear and water to leave in the car for after the hike. Check out our Hiking 101 for more info on what to bring/wear: https://fatgirlshiking.com/hiking-101/
