Enjoy visual arts activities inspired by iconic dishes from our favorite New Orleans festivals!

About this Event

Festival season may be postponed until fall, but the springtime fun continues. Children, adults, and all foodies in between can get a “taste” of what’s to come with visual arts activities inspired by iconic dishes from some of the best festivals in New Orleans.

The series was created for students (ages 6+), families, and educators - but open to all!

STRAWBERRY FEST | Thursday, April 8th | 4:30-5:30pm CT

Strawberry Cakes & Wayne Thiebaud

In this lesson, we will be creating desserts inspired by the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival! We will learn about the American painter Wayne Thiebaud and his beautiful and frothy depictions of cakes and sweets. Students will create a strawberry cake of their own design!

Materials:

  • 1 sheet of copy paper
  • 1 sheet of cardstock or watercolor paper
  • 1 pencil with an eraser
  • Drawing supplies such as crayons, colored pencils, and markers

FRENCH QUARTER FEST ft. CRAWFISH FEST | Thursday, April 15th | 4:30-5:30pm CT

Crawfish & Beignets

In this lesson, we will be learning what a diptych is and creating our own featuring 2 of our favorite French Quarter Fest staples-- crawfish and beignets!

Materials:

  • 1 sheet of copy paper
  • 1 sheet of cardstock or watercolor paper
  • 1 pencil with an eraser
  • Drawing supplies such as crayons, colored pencils, and markers
  • 1 pair of scissors

PO-BOY FEST | Thursday, April 22nd | 4:30-5:30pm CT

Poboys and Claes Oldenberg

In this lesson, we will be building (and dressin') our very own po'boy using collaging techniques! We will learn about the pop artist Claes Oldenburg and his HUGE food art!

Materials:

  • 1 sheet of cardstock or watercolor paper
  • 1 pencil with an eraser
  • 1 pair of scissors
  • 1 glue stick or bottle of white glue
  • Collaging materials such as old magazines/newspapers, colored construction paper, cereal boxes/ food packaging

JAZZ FEST | Thursday, April 29th | 4:30-5:30pm CT

Crawfish Monica & Yaka Mein

In this lesson, we will have the option of making one of two Jazzfest food favorites-- Crawfish Monica or Yaka Mein. We will be drawin' and dreamin' of a hot day out at the fairgrounds eating the coveted "Jazzfest foods"!

Materials:

  • 1 sheet of copy paper
  • 1 sheet of cardstock or watercolor paper
  • 1 pencil with an eraser
  • Drawing supplies such as crayons, colored pencils, and markers

Meet your Teacher: Erin Doherty

Ms. Erin is a native New Orleanian, visual artist, and arts educator. She attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and received an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Fine Arts with a focus on the handmade. Her mediums include painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, bookbinding, and weaving. Since 2012, she has been teaching visual arts at several nonprofits in Chicago, New Orleans, and rural Mississippi. She strives to create a safe, supportive creative space to nourish the souls of our diverse community here in New Orleans.
