Event description
Learn about what and how the inmates ate and how that changed over the history of the prison with a customized tour focusing on the food.

About this Event

Be among the first to tour the newly re-furbished Soup Alley and Officers Mess at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, as we take a look behind the walls of the prison which set the stage for prison reform all over the world over when it opened in 1829. For almost a century the prison’s standard of inmate isolation and penitence was copied and considered the most humane. But by 1913, overcrowding forced a new, more communal incarceration experience. We will examine what the inmates ate through period menus and how that changed over the course of the prison’s history before its gates were closed in 1970. Our visit will also look at how religious dietary rules impacted the inmates with a tour of the building’s Synagogue and Catholic chapel. Our tour, should take about 2 hours.

Eastern State Penitentiary is located at 2027 Fairmount Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19130. The visitor entrance is located through the gate on this street. A public parking lot is located to the left of the entrance. Free street parking may be found around the block. The website is helpful about public transportation, other parking options, and handicap accessibility. www.easternstate.org

Please be at the Entrance at 10:15AM. Wear walking shoes and dress for the cold weather as some parts of the site are not covered or heated. Bottle water will be provided.

You are welcome to bring your own lunch to consume outside in the prison courtyard if the weather is nice. However we are reserving some places at Jack’s Firehouse (a restaurant directly across the street). If you are interested in joining a group of us there with each paying for their own lunch, please indicate that on the signup form. For those who would like to explore other Fairmount eaters, please see the list attached for dining options.

After lunch you are welcome to return to this historic site to view:

* The newest exhibit Prisons Today: Questions in the Age of Mass Incarceration

* Engage in Hands-On History interactive experiences

* Visit Al Capone's cell * Visit the Museum Store
