Event description

Description

Want to make some ethanol? Come learn about energy and ethanol at the Global Impact STEM Academy.

Participants will explore how the Ag industry is creating quality feed and fuel while helping the environment. These lessons address Ohio Science Standards in 7th and 8th grade science, Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Science.

  • How can our students explore the importance of agricultural science as it relates to our ecosystems?
  • How is ethanol creating quality feed and fuel for Ohio and around the world?
  • Why is renewable ethanol important to our lives and the future?
  • How can agricultural careers impact our student's pathways?

Network with industry and fellow educators, practice a variety of labs focused on water and soil science, and connect agriculture to your classroom. Here's the agenda:

  • Corn Fermentation in a Bag: Engineering design activity focused on fermentation and ethanol production
  • Biomass to Sugars: Determine how much sugar is available in corn for ethanol production?
  • Lunch: Industry experts discuss the importance of technology in agriculture as it relates to renewable energy and animal feed
  • Ethanol: Create a corn mash, perform nutrient testing, distill ethanol & perform a Stirling engine test

Each participant will receive kit materials to perform the Corn Fermentation in a Bag, Biomass to Sugars, and Ethanol: Corn Mash and Distillation labs in the classroom along with a Stirling engine that runs on ethanol!

All expenses paid, including materials and food. CEU certificates provided. Sponsored by Ohio Corn & Wheat.
