Solar Wall and Solar Duct

"This collector system exhibits the highest known efficiency for an active solar heating system."  Chuck Kutscher, National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL)

During the first hour of this lunch and learn, learn about SolarWall, a patented solar thermal technology, which preheats ventilation air.  It uses an external perforated metal wall system and internal framing system that together can heat air 5 - 25° C above ambient. The system has been adopted across Canada and the United and qualifies for multiple incentives, including a 30% grant in the United States.

The Solar Wall technology converts 80% of the available solar thermal energy providing up to 600 watts peak per m2.  Moreoever, the product recaptures building wall heat losses and increases effective insulation value up to R-50.  In buildings where significant ventilation air is needed, the product provides building managers an easy way to reduce heating costs.  It also can be used to make use of the overheated air that collects near the top of a building.  The weatherproof exterior facade comes in 20 colors and requires virtually no maintenance.

BioPCMat™ - Ways To Achieve High Density, High Performance Thermal Mass In Your Design

The 2nd hour will focus on Bio PCM, an organic phase change material used for energy conservation in buildings.  Architects, building scientists, and sustainability engineers are committed to lowering energy consumption and decreasing carbon footprint while increasing the qualitative human experience of the built environment.  This presentation summarizes a set of design prototypes that characterize the thermal and visual nature of an emerging class of organic phase change materials (PCMs) with high thermal storage density.  A novel packaging system designed for liquid to solid phase transition is described that reveals the intrinsic qualities of PCM latent heat transfer capacity.  The presentation will discuss the various ways that PCM is being used in different locations within a building.  It is envisioned that this application, in addition to providing effective thermal self-regulation and lowering the reliance on mechanical conditioning, can engender occupant behavioral change towards energy conversion.  This argument is based on the connected domains of sensory pattern recognition, reasoning, and decision-making as the sustainable technology is made visible.  A case study is also presented with the quantitative energy results of PCM application.

Two learning units will be available to attendees. Lunch will be provided. This lunch and learn is free to all current AIAGV members and students. Non-AIAGV members must pay $15 by check (make checks out to AIA Grand Valley and send to AIA Grand Valley, Attention: Deborah Dik, 10238 10 Mile Road, NE, Rockford, MI 49341) or by credit card at Eventbrite.

If you sign up and cannot attend for any reason, please email Deborah Dik at or call 616-340-6200 so we can cancel your lunch.
