The First ‘Global Immigration Crisis’:History and Contemporary Issues

Immigration is a central issue in the U.S. and around
the world – and not for the first time. Award-winning
author Erika Lee tells the forgotten history of the first
global “immigration crisis” when Asian immigration
sparked international debates, race riots, and new
restriction laws around the world.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Erika Lee is an award-winning American historian,
Director of the Immigration History Research Center,
and the Rudolph J. Vecoli Chair in Immigration
History at the University of Minnesota. Her new book, The Making of
Asian America: A History was published by Simon &
Schuster in 2015 to wide acclaim.
