Event description

Please join us for FCWC's fall benefit, a sail aboard Pete Seeger's historic Hudson River Sloop Clearwater! We'll be hosting two sails at 10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm, departing from the historic Yonkers Pier.

This will be a fantastic opportunity to meet local environmentalists and hear about the Hudson River’s history and ecology. Learn how to navigate the sloop, enjoy sea chanteys as we hoist the sail, and more!

We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you there!

Here's a little bit of background about Clearwater:

"Clearwater was founded by Pete Seeger, legendary musician, singer, songwriter, folklorist, activist, environmentalist, and peace advocate, and one of the most influential people of the twentieth century. In 1966, in despair over the pollution of his beloved Hudson River, Seeger announced plans to “build a boat to save the river.” At the time, the Hudson was rank with raw sewage, toxic chemicals and oil pollution; fish had disappeared over many miles of its length. Seeger, along with many other concerned individuals, believed a majestic replica of the sloops that sailed the Hudson in the 18th and 19th centuries would bring people to the river where they could experience its beauty and be moved to preserve it. Inspired by that vision, the organization began with the launch of the sloop Clearwater in 1969 —a majestic 106-foot long replica vessel.

The sloop Clearwater is recognized as America’s Environmental Flagship and is among the first vessels in the United States to conduct science-based environmental education aboard a sailing ship, creating the template for environmental education programs around the world." Read more.

Have questions about the sail? Here are some FAQ's:

How do I get there? Where should I park?

The sail will depart from the historic Yonkers Pier, located at 71 Water Grant Street. The pier is located a 5-minute walk from the Yonkers Metro North train station. The schedule for Metro-North Hudson Line trains is available here. Street parking is available; the pier is accessible from Main Street (walk under the Main Street trellis). There is also a parking garage at 20-38 Buena Vista Ave, Yonkers, which is a 10-minute walk from the pier.

What if it rains?

Sails are at the captain's discretion and will run even with light rain.

From Clearwater:

"What should I wear?

As it is generally a few degrees cooler out on the water than it is on land, but there is very little shade on the decks of Clearwater, we recommend dressing in layers and wearing plenty of sun protection- Hats, sunblock, and sunglasses are all useful. In case of light rain, rain jackets are preferable to ponchos, as they are less problematic in the wind. Please do not bring umbrellas or anything else that can be blown off the boat. Flat, comfortable footwear is recommended.

Can small children come sailing?

Yes - for public sails, children of all ages are welcome onboard with proper adult supervision. Clearwater has a limited number of infant/toddler life jackets onboard.

Is Clearwater accessible to people with disabilities?

People with disabilities sail with us often. Some areas of the boat are not accessible to people with limited mobility or those in wheelchairs, as they are accessed via ladders or steps. These areas are: Below decks (including the heads), and the quarterdeck. Please note that, although Clearwater’s crew is comfortable assisting people with disabilities as they board and disembark, not all of our docks are fully accessible to wheelchairs or people with limited mobility."
