Event description

Description

Join us to hear our guest speaker, former DC and Chicago transportation commissioner Gabe Klein talk about his new book, Start-Up City. You will hear his insights about how to effect big, directional change in cities-and do it fast. Engage in a conversation with Gabe and the other attendees about how you, your business, your organization, your agency can leverage "public entrepreneurship" opportunities in the District to create getting real, meaningful projects done quickly and having fun while doing it. These projects and initiatives can be new transportation options and resources as well as other sustainability focused services and products.

In the midst of a dynamic market of improvement and options for DC’s transportation activity, the Smarter DC Challenge has a set of Transit and Travel Activities where participants can earn points for the implementation of car sharing, bike sharing, and increased tele-working. Or come to find out about how to be strategic about charting new paths to manage your transportation needs by using new apps to navigate public transportation and shared commuting options. Or come to get inspired to create some of your own new products, services or programs that others can use.

Gabe is a great speaker to hear from because his career has been an inspiring example of how to effectively bridge the public-private divide. He has found common ground leading him and his partners to celebrate shared goals, all while forging better cities with more nimble, consumer-oriented bureaucracies.

As Director of Transportation in DC, he launched Capital Bikeshare, the first large-scale bike-share system in the United States, as well as DC’s parking pay-by-phone system. He then moved on to Chicago to design and built the city’s Riverwalk, creating 100 miles of bike lanes, and launching Chicago's bike-share program, Divvy. Prior to his public service, Gabe was an executive with Zipcar, expanding their DC fleet from 28 to 500 vehicles. He also started On the Fly, the nation’s first all-natural, electric-powered food-truck company.

With the advent of self-driving vehicles and other technological shifts upon us, Gabe Klein will be sharing thoughts from his new book, Start-Up City, on how we can close the gap between the energized, aggressive world of start-ups and the complex bureaucracies struggling to change beyond a geologic time scale.

Gabe’s book will be available for purchase at the event.
