About Bald Girls Do Lunch

Bald Girls Do Lunch is a not-for-profit 501c3 organization founded in 2007 by Thea Chassin. It offers a vehicle for women who have lost part or all of their bodily hair to a disease that has no specific known cause and no cure to meet one another, to learn from one another and to go boldly forward into what is, for them, uncharted territory.

We do lunch, but we do a lot of other things, as well:

We Connect: We are all different, but we are bound together through Alopecia Areata, a disease that is as confounding as it is unpredictable. It afflicts thousands of people worldwide; it affects each one in a different way, and there are varied forms and stages of the disease which is a specific type of immune system disorder.

We Meet: Getting together with girlfriends is good for the soul and for the spirit. Our network is expanding, and in every locale there are women who can benefit from association with others. Depending on the need, we eat, we meet for coffee, we plan workshops, we go shopping. We have fun together having fun in all the ways than any other group of women has fun. We share a common bond, but that does not define us.

We Explore: Women in each area decide what topics to explore: Wigs and makeup, stylish hats and ways to tie scarves, emotional issues and ways of coping, current research, how to educate others. Nothing is off-limits, and because we are a member-driven organization, new ideas are always welcome.

We Listen.

We Learn.

We Grow

Because we are as diverse as any group of women can be, there is a wide range of information, events and suggestions -- all designed to help you start living well right now. Practical advice and real-world tools, based on research and grounded in personal experience, lead to straight talk about things that are hard to talk about. Knowing that you are not alone as you face the future often heralds a new dawn following the crisis of a diagnosis.

Even though Alopecia is not strictly a women's disease, it can be especially hard for women to cope with hair loss. The BGDL sisterhood is the best antidote for feelings of despair, and we welcome you whether you wear your baldness openly or never appear in public without a wig. There is no right way to live with this condition, but there is every reason to live well with Alopecia.
