Description

  • Note: No need to print out your ticket, just mention your last name when checking in.
  • Stop by early - docents from the Santa Monica Conservancy available 5-6:30pm at the Marion Davies Guest House to discuss the fascinating history of the site.

Snappy lines met snazzy dressers in the sophisticated comedies of the 1930s - 1950s. This iteration of Kimberly Truhler's popular Fashion in Film series is inspired by the 2017 Turner Classic Movie Film Festival lineup, so she will be referring to an array of sartorially splendid comedy film examples, most of which will be screened later in the week at the festival.

Costume design contributes to the ongoing legacy of classic films, and this talk touches on how integral film wardrobe is for establishing character and maintaining plot. Delve into the stories behind the styles through stills from the movies and the runway, plus Truhler's often-hilarious running commentary on film history, star stories, costume and fashion designers, and how the past influences current fashion. Learn about some of the most important designer-star partnerships, including Jean Harlow and Adrian, Carole Lombard and Travis Banton, and Barbara Stanwyck and Edith Head.

The TCM Classic Film Festival runs Thursday, April 6 to Sunday, April 9, 2017.

Films include:

Red-Headed Woman (1932)
20th Century (1934)
It Happened One Night (1934)
The Awful Truth (1937)
The Philadelphia Story (1940)
The Lady Eve (1941)
The Palm Beach Story (1942)
Born Yesterday (1950)
Some Like It Hot (1959)

Kimberly Truhler is an author, preservationist, and educator on the “History of Fashion in Film.” In 2009, Truhler founded her company GlamAmor, and has since written hundreds of articles on iconic costume design and its influence on fashion today. With more than twenty years studying film and costume design history, a decade curating vintage garments, and a long work history in LA’s Fashion District, she is much requested as a guest speaker around Southern California on film and costume topics. Truhler’s “History of Fashion in Film” was a popular course at Woodbury University in Los Angeles, and she is the go-to consultant on film fashion history for companies such as Turner Classic Movies (TCM), BBC Worldwide, Christie’s auction house, and Elle magazine. She currently manages marketing for three of Sony's movie channels. Two books are in the works—one a biography on costume designer Jean Louis and another on nearly a century of the History of Fashion in Film.
