Description

Farming With the Wild: Reconciling Food Production and Habitat Conservation Goals with Alan Haight of Riverhill Farm

SLT Headquarters in Santa Rosa

Food production is essential to human existence, but will we be able feed 10 billion people by the year 2055? Sustainable agriculture may offer some solutions and provide a path forward for continued access to healthful, nutritious food while also safeguarding the planet’s health. Learn about one farm’s efforts to feed its community while enhancing the environment on which the farm and, indeed, all life depends.

About Alan Haight:

Alan Haight has farmed at Riverhill Farm in the Sierra Nevada foothills for the past twenty years. He recently retired from farming and has leased the farm to a young farmer. When establishing the farm, Alan and his wife, Jo, sought to create a farm that could serve as a model of economic viability while also enhancing the environment on which the farm and, indeed, all life depends. The farm is highly regarded in both respects, and continues to provide its community with healthful food and a rich, biodiverse refuge for everything from mountain lions and bears to birds, dragonflies, crickets, and gophers.
