Description

FARMING 102: COOL SEASON CROP SERIES

Our Farming 102 classes are offered a la carte or sold as a package (only on the event page of the first class in the series). Each of the 3 classes includes classroom time and hands-on field labs at Wild Willow Farm, where many of these crops are being grown. Students will be taken on a plant family journey learning the history of the plant and are instructed step by step from starting your seeds/plants, maintenance, and harvesting. Topics include the level of care required, level of fertility, watering needs, common pests and diseases, and yield. Special attention will be paid to seasonality, as students identify the appropriate season for specific crops.

Each class includes a cooking demo and tasting samples of what Wild Willow Farm grows. For lunch, students are asked to bring a potluck dish representative of the plant family being discussed!

Led by farmer Paul Maschka, a highly respected seasoned farmer and instructor in holistic agriculture. You are sure to learn a great deal no matter what your experience level is!

CLASS #2: ALL ABOUT THE ONIONS & PARSLEY FAMILY

Onions:
I don't know about you, but I use onions and garlic in almost every dish! This family also includes: chives, leeks, shallots, and green onions. Varieties of onions include short-day and long-day, pickling, sweet, pungent, bunching and more. Shallots and leeks are considered to be gourmet and are expensive at markets but are easy to grow. The stems of garlic, called scapes or ramps depending on variety, are delicious to eat! What is the difference between hardneck and softneck garlic and which one should you grow?! You can learn this and so much more...

Parsley Family:
This family includes some of your favorite wintertime veges and spices for a warming soup: celery, carrot, parsley, cilantro, anise, caraway, coriander, dill, fennel, parsley and way more! This plant family makes for great companion plants that attract ladybugs, parasitic wasps, and predatory flies that will prey on parasitic pests on nearby plants. Parsley's medicinal purposes include digestion aid, diuretic, histamine inhibitor for allergy sufferers, treatment for diabetes, high blood pressure, immune support and much more! For those not keen on dairy products, parsley is packed with calcium.
