Event description

Description

Our popular Farming 101 seven-week Regenerative Farming training program is being offered a la carte for the first time this summer July 14 thru August 25! This page is to enroll in the individual topic classes.

You may enroll in the full course package and save money. For more information click here.

Every week focuses on a different foundational food-growing topic. You can select the specific week you wish to attend according to the topic in which you want to expand your knowledge. Any experience level is welcome. Our education is based on sustainable regenerative farming using natural cultivation methods with minimal waste/water consumption and advocate against the use of environmentally harmful chemicals.

Each topic includes a two-hour lecture on Wednesday evenings in South Park followed by a hands-on lab work on the farm from 9am-4pm. Attendance at the Wednesday class is required for participation in the Saturday Lab.

Class #2: "Growing Fertile Soil"

This week will focus on farm tools (proper use and care), evaluating soil texture and moisture, bed preparation, mechanical and manual tillage, compost tea and extract. Your purchase includes the lecture on Wednesday July 25th 6pm-8pm and the field lab on Saturday July 28th 9am-4pm.

Details: “Feed the soil to feed the plant.” This class emphasizes the importance of building and maintaining fertile soil to ensure healthy plants. Topics covered include building fertile soil through the use of organic matter and low-till practices, and understanding the role that the microbiology of the soil and plants have on soil fertility. Students will examine soil and evaluate texture and moisture, as well as soil type. The Living Lab will teach proper bed-preparation techniques with the least amount of soil disturbance. Wild Willow Farm’s Complete Organic Fertilizer recipe will be shared, as students prepare the mixture out of locally available products such as animal feeds. Focus will also be on the description of farm tools used in small-scale and handcrafted farming, that leans towards a goal of no-till farming methods.
