Fargo Think&Drink: “Responses To The Past”
Event Information
Description
Think&Drink is a Humanities happy hour series that combines good conversation and great beer. Join our content experts for a dynamic dialogue set in a great local bar.
How should we remember North Dakota pioneers?
What are our responsibilities as residents of lands taken from previous occupants?
Communities throughout the United States are debating whether to remove monuments to Confederate generals or replace holidays celebrating Indian removal. But what about North Dakota? Should we replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day and Thanksgiving with Unthanksgiving or National Day of Mourning commemorations? Which narratives do we remember and celebrate, and which do we choose to forget? This session will explore the underlying questions of how we could or should remember our frontier past, and how these memories of the past shape who we will become in the future.
Be ready for a lively discussion of popular statues, public holidays, sport team mascots, “Western” movies and books and other items that reflect the ways our settler past continues to shape North Dakota’s present.
Discussion led by Rebeccca Weaver-Hightower and Cynthia Culver Prescott
Moderated by Dennis Cooley
