Far More Than the Finishing Touch: Designing for the Coldshop (40x40)
Tue, Mar 28, 2017, 6:00 PM – Fri, Mar 31, 2017, 10:00 PM EDT
A basic knowledge of cold working techniques can help right many wrongs created in the kilns or in the hot shop. However, when explored for its own inherent value and integrated into an artist’s vision from the start, cold working can be used to enhance and extend works to a new level. This class will explore the possibilities available when cold working of an object is taken into account from the beginning of the creative process. Students will work with found objects and sheet glass, and will have the opportunity to design and make their own objects in the kiln and the hot shop. Each object will be an opportunity to explore their ideas of form, pattern and imagery. Areas covered will include grinding, polishing, wheel engraving and wheel cutting, sandblasting and hand finishing. A short presentation on historical & contemporary cold working will complement hands-on work.
This class is being offered as part of our 40 for 40 series, a celebration of the 40th anniversary of UrbanGlass.
