Event description
Family Week is the largest annual gathering of LGBTQIA+ families in the world co-hosted by COLAGE and Family Equality.

About this Event

Family Week is a week-long event co-hosted by COLAGE and Family Equality where lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and/or asexual (LGBTQIA+) families grow together in Provincetown, MA.

For more than 20 years, Family Week has supported and inspired, fostered community and friendships, and addressed the unique joys and challenges that arise for LGBTQIA+ families through a week of programs, events, and celebrations. Generations of Family Week alumni are now active allies, change agents, social justice leaders, and compassionate individuals who are making a difference.

COLAGE offers daily programming at Family Week for youth ages 8-18. COLAGE programs are thoughtfully developed for each age group balancing creativity with recreation, providing a safe environment to talk with other youth about challenges they face and ways to become empowered, while focusing on connecting your child with a network of peers that will be lifelong friends and support system. COLAGE also encourages parents to be involved through complementary programming we offer throughout the week. Sign up for our Family Week Newsletter to learn more about what COLAGE has to offer this year.

  • Entrance to COLAGE’s morning drop-off program for youth ages 8-18. The day program is in the morning Monday through Friday and is led by trained volunteer facilitators who also have LGBTQIA+ parents, guardians, and/or caregivers; many of whom have also grown up in COLAGE programs and have developed their leadership skills through participation at Family Week.
  • Entrance to exclusive youth-only afternoon events and hangout spaces.
  • Parents and Caregivers will be given free access to all COLAGE-only staple events such as the very popular Friday variety show.
  • Families will also be given access to whole-family events throughout the course of the week such as but not limited to the Teen panel, family gatherings, Beach Campfire Night at Herring Cove Beach, and Pride parade.
  • By joining COLAGE at Family Week, youth and families will gain access to the largest network of youth in LGBTQIA+ families across the world. All COLAGE workshops are created by people in LGBTQIA+ families for youth in LGBTQIA+ families and attendees and volunteers travel from all over the world to support COLAGE and the youth at Family Week.

Make sure you register your family with COLAGE for Family Week 2020 before it's too late! COLAGE's programming at Family Week sold out in May last year and we expect to sell out again. COLAGE has a set number of volunteer staff for Family Week and a set number of youth ratios to foster a great connecting between adult COLAGE mentors and youth. For example, the middle school group has a ratio to 6 youth to one camp counselor. We stick to these ratios to best respect and support our youth and volunteers. Because of those ratios and a set number of volunteer staff, we have a max capacity per age group. Don't wait until we have a waiting list to register your child. Register today!

"COLAGEr space is very important because you get to express your inner self…One thing I learned this week that I will take back home with me is to not be ashamed!" - 10-year-old participant

"I think it’s important to educate kids about their families and show them that they aren’t alone as kids with queer parents. I learned that it’s important to take pride in your family and to stand up for what you believe in." - 12-year-old participant

"COLAGE is my family. I couldn’t imagine my life without it." - 16-year-old participant

"Congratulations! COLAGE Family Week was a huge success! I also wanted to say thank you for your encouragement around bringing my daughter to Family Week. I did pull off her being there for the whole week and I am very grateful for your encouragement. She even participated in the panel - something I never dreamed she would do!" - Parent of first-time youth participant

Family Week really is for ALL families in celebration of our different perspectives, lives, experiences, and accessibility needs! ASL interpreters are available throughout the week, just indicate your need while registering. In Ptown, many buildings are one story and there are few to no elevators in many Ptown buildings that are more than one story, there are usually steps to enter buildings and little to no parking.

Given that knowledge of Ptown, COLAGE has made a commitment to only having events and workshop in buildings that are one-story or in a multi-story building with an elevator. We also have programming outside in various locations such as a beach with a wooden and access mat beach that extends halfway down the sand but with the tide, does not always provide a reliable or accessible decline onto the beach. With the help of the Family Week planning team at Family Equality, we have gathered measurements, images, and pictures from in-person trips to gather access information for anyone who may want to know more about the spaces and if their access requests can be met at Family Week or specific events. We have chairs at all or our events for both youth and parents to be able to sit down and COLAGE staff are always willing to work with participants in any way to make more spaces accessible for our participants. As a mainly able-bodied team of organizers, we recognize that Family Week is being planned through an ally lens in disability justice and are very open to feedback and giving support and as much information as needed. If you have any questions about how we can best support you and your family please email familyweek@colage.org. Thank you!

What is the difference between COLAGE registration and Family Equality Registration for Family Week?

COLAGE and Family Equality invite you to Family Week, the largest annual gathering of LGBTQIA+ families in the world. This fun-filled week will include more opportunities than ever to build community and to get empowered in today's issues. Your family may register with one organization, or both to enjoy all the great programs.

COLAGE offers workshops and programs for youth ages 8-18+ and their families every day at Family Week. All COLAGE programs are created and led by and for people with a LGBTQIA+ parent and caregiver. Family Equality offers programs, workshops, and events at Family Week for parents, youth, and the whole family. Click here to learn more about Family Equality specific events and register today.

What if I want to only send my kid to COLAGE programming one day?

Registration covers the full week of programming and we encourage all registered participants to attend COLAGE events Sunday through Friday. The week-long session allows youth to make lasting friendships with people who also have LGBTQIA+ parents/caregivers and foster a sense of community. Our programs build upon each other to create a week-long curriculum that is developed by and for people in LGBTQIA+ families. More information below. If you have any further questions please email familyweek@colage.org.
