Event description

Description

Join us on Saturday, March 21 as part of Brooklyn Historical Society's for free family programming at BHS DUMBO.

Just like Rosie the Riveter at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, we’re going to make our own boats using recycled materials. Families can build their vessels that are powered by masts, sails, or engines. The program will also highlight National Grid’s outreach programs that teach about the history and future of gas as a clean energy source. Families will learn about the evolution of how they move from wind to oil to gas power (used on boats for lighting, as well as in welding), and will assemble a boat that will float!

Then stay to enjoy the many family-friendly parts of Waterfront with children as young as one-year old to…

  • Dress up like the women welders of the Brooklyn Navy Yard in WWII.

  • Touch and smell goods, like cochineal bugs and coffee beans, which passed through Empire Stores when it was a busy warehouse.

  • Use our Brooklyn waterfront magnet board to design your own city.

  • Film videos of yourself traveling back in time.

  • Color a Brooklyn waterfront themed postcard to mail to family & friends.

Don't miss this special morning for families!
