Program Description:

Effective individual intervention requires knowledge of the client’s broader social context. This training will look at the role of family in individual intervention as well as the benefits to involving families in treatment. Participants will learn to identify dynamics operating within families, create a working hypothesis about the purpose of a behavior, and apply techniques and strategies for working with families to create change in the identified client.

Goal: To increase understanding of the family's contribution to individual change and to develop skills to effectively work with families on behalf of individual clients, particularly young children and youth.

Objectives:

  • Identify personal attitudes and bias about working with family
  • Use key dynamics in family system to explain individual behavior
  • Using role plays, demonstrate ability to implement key skills and intervention

Workshop Outline:

  • Examining personal bias
  • family dynamics: key concepts
  • What the genogram "says"
  • Creating a working hypothesis about the purpose of the "problem" behavior
  • Interventions and strategies

Participants: Counselors, Social Workers, Psychologists, Chemical Dependency, Specialists or behavioral health providers working with children and families.
