NCRY 2019 SPECIAL OPERATIONS PLAN – Family RailFan Event Sept. 7, 2019 1:30 p.m.

The NCRy Family Railfan Event is a never-before offered opportunity for the novice railfan to ride behind two iconic standard gauge Mallet locomotives, the 2-6-6-2T Clover Valley Lumber Company #4 and the 2-4-4-2 Columbia River Belt Line Railway #7, better known as the Skookum, through Niles Canyon.

The Niles Canyon Railway will be celebrating the all-important 150th Anniversary of the Completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. The rail line through Niles Canyon was the primary route for overland traffic to and from the San Francisco Bay. The true final completion on September 6th, 1869 is when the Last Link of the Transcontinental Railroad was opened from Sacramento to Oakland. The hard working efforts and ingenuity of thousands of Irish and Chinese migrant workers made the rail connection between the Central Pacific Railroad and the Union Pacific Railroad a reality.

In celebration of this historic event, the Niles Canyon Railway wants to use this opportunity to introduce Bay Area families to the excitement and joys of being a railfan. Railfanning is similar to the activity known in Great Britain as ‘TrainSpotting’. Families worldwide make stopping at historic or interesting rail destinations an important part of their vacation activities. And there are thousands of interesting locations, of which the Niles Canyon Railway is near the top of everyone’s list!

Families (or even individuals) attending this event will learn about the joys of railfanning, and how to do it safely and with maximum benefits. And there is no better way to experience it then actually riding on a train!

This event is limited to 150 passengers and will include a photo run-by in Historic Niles Canyon on the final link of the Transcontinental Railroad, opened in September of 1869. The train will depart our Niles Station at 1:30PM and travel East across Dresser (1906) and Farwell bridges (1896).

The train will then highball to Sunol to take on water, passing through our maintenance facility, Brightside Yard. Passengers can visit our Gift Shop, as well as visit the Depot Freight Room to see the Stanford University exhibit of historic photos and artifacts entitled The Chinese and the Iron Road, which provides a visual understanding of the difficult work accomplished by the 12,000 Chinese laborers who built the railroad, and what became of these men after they connected the West. Of course, the photo opportunities will be abundant with the locomotive taking water adjacent to the 1880's Depot.

Included with your fare is a lunch prepared by the Niles Canyon Commissary team in the Niles/Fremont Station Garden, as well as some special souvenirs commemorating your visit. Lunch is provided before your train ride so please come around 12:00-12:30 p.m.
