SCHEDULE

9 a.m.         Main Library opens, seating begins

9:30 a.m.    Welcome

9:45-11 a.m. Session 1

  • The Nature of Genealogy

This presentation will cover understanding history, research, repositories, records, theory development, results analysis and publishing findings.  It is woven around a case study of discovering a new ancestor by an experienced genealogist.

11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m.  Session 2

  • Identifying Slave Owners

The names of slave owners are not always passed down from generation to generation through oral history. Therefore, research must be conducted to identify the former slave owner that is based on evidence, not assumption. There are many records that indicate the name of the former slave owner. Learn how to prove who the last slave owner was.

12:30-1:45 p.m.  Lunch break

Visit Carnegie's Cafe on the first floor, eat your packed lunch or venture off-site to one of the many restaurants near Main Library.

  • Group tours of the Local History & Genealogy space
  • Franklin County Genealogical & Historical Society open house
  • Digital Lab scanning demonstrations

1:45-3 p.m.  Session 3

  • Military Research

Wars have been fought in every generation. Military records for these conflicts and the peacetime between conflicts are some of the best tools for genealogy research. The National Archives, various state archives and other institutions house voluminous amounts of public military records.

3:15-4:30 p.m. Session 4

  • Order Out of Chaos

Have you searched in every courthouse, every library and every archive and still haven't solved your riddle? One of the keys to success in genealogy is doing more with what you already have. Sometimes the pieces are there, we just need to look at them in different ways. Reorganizing and analyzing may solve your genealogy riddle.
