Event Details

Family foundations now award about $21,000,000,000 a year in grants - which is 62% of ALL independant foundation grant dollars awarded in 2009!

Do you know how to maximize your chance of success with this growing source of philanthropic support?

In this on-line session, you will learn the optimal approach to a family foundation based on whether your prospective funder:

  • Has staff or not
  • Has Family still involved
  • Has identified goals

What are the key clues that will govern your approach when you connect with family foundations in your area or those that share your mission? Are there variations in how family foundations operate, and if so, how should that affect our approach? What does it mean if a family foundation has staff -- or not -- and does it matter if the staff members are also members of the family? What do families want to achieve when they form a family foundation, and how can we effectively communicate our ability to carry our programs that meet the family goals?

Researcher Melissa Brown will share her knowledge and insights as well as anecdotes about family foundations and their diverse styles and structures. She will also draw on research from the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, the Johnson Center for Philanthropy in Michigan, and the National Center for Family Philanthropy.

In this session, get practical information about how to interpret some of the cues about family foundation decision-making. Learn what to look for when you develop strategies for cultivating relationships with this fast-growing segment of donors.

Learning Outcome:

Developing a strategic approach to family foundations based on their size, mission and history

Intended audience:
