Enjoy one more mini-vacation with your family before school starts! Spend 3-days, 2 nights glamping in a renovated cabin or a comfy tent in the woods.Meals, nature crafts and other kid-friendly outdoor activities are included!

This midweek adventure will offer families delightful hikes along with rustic nature crafts, leaf printing art, a planting project, and more. There will be plenty of time for families to relax and engage in activities on their own. Kids of all ages are welcome. Nature crafts are aimed at ages 6-12 year olds.

Families who would like to fish should bring their poles and lures, and I will be glad to go over some good techniques to fish Breakneck Pond.

Sample schedule includes:

Day 1

  • 3:00 p.m. Arrival and Check-in
  • 4:00 p.m. Family Time - swim, explore, kayak
  • 6:00 p.m. Dinner in the Dinning Hall
  • 7:00 p.m. Create a woodland craft
  • 8:30 p.m. Campfire
  • 9:30 Stargazing

Day 2

  • 8:00 a.m. Morning Feast in the Dinning Hall
  • 9:00 a.m. Tree Identification Hike
  • 10:00 a.m. Leaf Printing
  • 12:00 noon - Lunch (on your own)
  • 1:00 a.m. Hike and/or Group Kayaking
  • 3:00 p.m. Family Time - swim, explore, kayak, relax
  • 6:00 p.m. Dinner in the Dinning Hall
  • 7:30 Games followed by campfire

Day 3

  • 8:00 a.m. Morning Feast in the Dinning Hall
  • 9:00 a.m. Build a bottle garden
  • 10:30 Pack
  • 11:15 Check-out
  • 12:00 noon Lunch
  • 1:00 Family Time

This program is led by the chapter’s Harriman Program Committee Volunteer Leaders. Paddling equipment is provided free of charge courtesy of the NY-NoJ Chapter. Personal canoes & kayaks are allowed; no permit is required. Loaner tents and sleeping pads are available.

Registration

Registration is mandatory. Programs fill quickly, so register early! Space is limited to 16 cabin and 8 tenting guests. All minors must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Register by Tuesday, August 6th midnight for Reduced Early Bird Prices. Registered guests will receive an information sheet at least one week prior to the event. Kid prices are discounted.

All rate includes 2 nights accommodation in a shared cabin or personal tent (Tuesday & Wednesday), 2 dinners (Tuesday & Wednesday), and program leadership provided by volunteer leaders. Trail lunch may be purchased separately before you check out or at the camp.

Rate excludes EvenBrite and credit card processing fees for non-members.

Accommodations

Choose to stay in either a newly renovated cabin or tent platforms. Storm King Cabin has 4 bedrooms, each with 4 bunks. There is a large center common room and 2 small refrigerators. Thick mattresses, blankets, and pillows are provided. Each Beaver Brook Tent Platform can accommodate 4 backpacking tents, which can be borrowed from the camp. Secure beatbox is available for food storage. Bath houses are nearby and have hot showers and flush toilets.

Check in that the camp office when you arrive. Check-in time is Tuesday at 3 p.m. Plan to arrive by 6 p.m. for dinner. Check out time is Thursday at 11 am, although you are welcome to enjoy the camp until 3 p.m.

Transportation

The camp is easily accessible by public transportation. Take either the NJ Transit/Metro North train from NY Penn Station Tuxedo, or the Shoreline bus from the 42nd Street Port Authority to Tuxedo. Call the camp office at 617-523-0636 ext 6522 in advance to reserve a seat ($5 each way per person).

The camp is about 45 minutes from NYC. Drive to Harriman State Park, which is off the Palisades Parkway. The gate to the camp is on Lake Welch Parkway (41.217869,-74.106021). Drive up to the camp office to check-in and unload your gear. Then park in the big field.

We encourage carpooling, but do not arrange it. Try starting a ride share at www.groupcarpool.com.

What to Bring

Bring sheets and pillow case or sleeping bag, tent, towels, hiking/swimming gear/sunscreen, bug spray, headlamp, hat, water bottle, and personal toiletries. Sheets and towels may be tented from the camp. Tents and sleeping pads may be borrowed from camp.

Cancellation Policy

Reservations cancelled more than 14 days in advance receive a full refundminus a $25 processing fee. Reservations cancelled 14 days or less in advanceare not refundable. If the AMC must cancel a probram, registrants will benotified and all fees will be refunded. Normal weather will not cancel this event.
