"Family Communication - Policies and Governance”

Effectively Herding Cats--Friendly and Feral

Debbie Brown, Board Chair, Laird Norton Company

It's been said that communication is the real work of leadership. At Laird Norton, with 400 shareholders, it requires extra effort to keep everyone informed, engaged, and positively aligned. Family members expect--and sometimes demand--that they are given information and regular updates related to the decisions and activities of the leadership team. Whether the topic is business performance, strategic direction, family highlights, or dispute resolution, the key is to communicate--openly and consistently with a sense of purpose. While there is no secret family recipe, Debbie will reveal the challenges and lessons learned related to communication in her family's business, and share the strategies they've found to be effective for promoting positive engagement among shareholders, AKA family.
