Tour Description

Tour Host: Kera McArthur

False Creek is an artery that runs through Vancouver, both cleaving the city from itself and uniting the communities that live on its shores. How and why we cross False Creek has shaped the history and development of the city.

Long before Europeans arrived, First Nations people crossed between camps and fish trapping areas. Wealthy nineteenth century West End residents summered at Greer’s beach (Kit’s Beach) before the street car made crossing easy. And mid-twentieth century planners wanted to fill in the creek with a freeway, allowing goods and people to cross more easily by car.

More recently, crossing the creek became a hot topic as we debated the future of the Burrard Street Bridge. This walk examines the different ways people have crossed False Creak for the past few hundred years. It will also discuss some of the proposals for new crossings, from bridges to a moving sidewalk to an aerial gondola system.

Along the way, we will explore the history of Kits Beach, Vanier Park, Granville Island and Yaletown as well as of the Creek itself. We will also ponder what the future holds for crossings of False Creek – maybe even a pedestrian and bike bridge like London, England or Winnipeg?
