Description

The Fall's French Cinema

Discover the new wave of francophone directors this fall with the Alliance Française de Seattle's cultural program. This Fall's French cinema program is the "neo nouvelle-vague", in reference to the generation of filmmakers that made the French New Wave in the 50s and 60s (Godard, Truffaut, Rohmer, etc.), breaking traditional narrative codes and innovating with plots, genres, and editing techniques.

+++ Thursday, Dec 6, 6:00-9:00pm

Un conte de Noël (A Christmas Tale), 2008, by Arnaud Desplechin, with Catherine Deneuve, Jean-Paul Roussillon, and Mathieu Amalric. 2h 30 min. Synopsis: When steely French matriarch Junon (Catherine Deneuve) learns she has leukemia, she asks her children and grandchildren at the family Christmas gathering to see if they are eligible to become bone marrow donors. This causes deep friction in the family, especially between Junon's daughter Elizabeth (Anne Consigny) and son Henri (Mathieu Amalric), who already have a tumultuous relationship. In French, with English subtitles, followed by Q&A.
