About this event
Registration is encouraged but not required. Participants who tour at least two of the three sites available will be treated to a free lunch at the Nest Café featuring local foods!
Stop one: historic Zoar Levee - Talk with US Army Corps of Engineers staff about the ongoing restoration of the Zoar levee, and how they protect this incredible national landmark. The Zoar Levee is part of a series of flood protection infrastructure throughout the Muskingum River Watershed. This structure keeps flood waters from the Tuscarawas River from reaching the village of Zoar.
Meet at the parking lot for Donnie's Tavern, 162 Main St., in Zoar, Ohio, for the Zoar Levee stop.
Stop two: the Magnolia Flouring Mills - The Magnolia Mill is owned and operated by Stark Parks. It sits along the historic Sandy and Beaver Canal, which was constructed in the 1800s. It would eventually stretch all the way from Bolivar, Ohio to Glasgow, Pennsylvania. The mill used hydro-powered equipment to grind flours and provided an important economic service for the surrounding community. This section of the canal lays adjacent to the Sandy Creek, a tributary of the Tuscarawas River.
Meet at the Magnolia Mill, at 261 N. Main St., Magnolia, Ohio, for the second stop.
Stop three: Fry Family Park - This park is one of the newest Stark Parks facilities. Straddling the watershed divide between the Sansdy Creek and Nimishillen Creek watersheds, this park offers miles of hiking trails over rolling hills. Stark Park staff will be on-site to discuss development of the property and planned future uses and amenities. There is a beautiful visitors center with numerous citizen scientist laboratory equipment available for viewing and use. In addition, this is a certified "Dark-Sky" facility, earning the recognition by being a wonderful spot for nighttime stargazing and astronomy exploration.
Meet at Fry Family visitor center, at 2533 Farber St. SE, Magnolia, Ohio, for the third stop.
The event is free, but donations are appreciated. Contact Sarah Robinson at sarahr@ruralaction.org or 330-859-1050 with questions.
