Event description

Description

SIGN UP NOW FOR OUR FALL SERIES! Limited seats.

Please join us for our Fall Series 2019 as we explore the idea of writing word by word and bird by bird, guided by the wisdom of writer Anne Lamott.

This series will be based on Lamott's famous book, Bird By Bird: Instructions on Writing and Life, and will explore the topics of writing, birds, humor, memoir, and storytelling. This series will take place against the backdrop of our fall art show, titled "Birds," which features six local women artists and writers. We've also planned various related activities, like neighborhood bird-watching hikes, our Artist Talk + Write, and our Wine, Women, and Words events, featuring local women leaders who will also give us instructions on birds, writing, and life.

WHAT: Fall Series 2019
WHEN: Sept. 4, 2019, 6-9:00 p.m. (registration between 6-:615; please arrive early)
WHERE: Riverside (1610 Osceola Street, 32204)
CLASS SIZE: Limited to 12 spaces; a waitlist of 2 people will be available.

Themes of the Semester

In this Fall Series, we'll explore how writing can be approached using a step-by-step process as laid out in Bird By Bird plus other ancillary sources. We'll go chapter by chapter and study the themes of the book, especially on the themes of writing as a step-by-step process, writing vs. publishing, spirituality/creativity, and the significance of writing in community.

We will meet weekly on Wednesday nights for 12 weeks, beginning September 4 and ending November 20. The semester culminates in a Public ReadAround the weekend of Dec. 7-8, 2019.

Who Should Sign Up?

New writer? Remember, you don't have to be a professional writer to join in. Use this class to find out more about Women Writing for (a) Change's amazing process, used by thousands of women across the country to express their authentic selves through writing and community-building. We'll use prompts, poetry, and prose to practice many different writing techniques.

Experienced writer? You'll have a chance to sharpen your craft and technique in our small-group circles, so, bring whatever project you're working on and expect good feedback.

“A circle of women may be the most powerful force known to humanity. If you have one, embrace it. If you need one, seek it. If you find one, for the love of all that is good and holy, Dive in. Hold on. Love it up. Get naked. Let them see you. Let them hold you. Let your reluctant tears fall. Let yourself rise fierce and love great. You will be changed. The very fabric of your Being will be altered by this. If you allow it. Please, allow it." — Jeanette LeBlanc
