Event Details

Blacksmithing and Campfire Cooking Workshop

Come forge your own campfire tools and cook with them, too! During this hands-on workshop at Cleveland Blacksmithing, you’ll learn the basics of forging iron by making your own outdoor cooking tools. Then, we’ll welcome special guest Sarah Lohman, a culinary historian and outdoor cooking instructor, as we learn to prepare an open-fire meal using the tools you just made. Of course, afterwards, we feast!

12pm - 4pm : First, we’ll start off with a 4 hour forging session, where you’ll have the opportunity to jump right in and start building your campfire cooking tools at the anvil using basic forging techniques covered throughout the class. The first item you’ll create is a fire poker, to be used during the evening’s outdoor cooking class. In the remaining time, we'll focus on building an over-the-fire cooking setup such as a simple spit or camp cooking tri-pod. Participants can expect to complete 2-3 pieces. Items subject to variation.

4pm - 6pm : After we finish forging, we’ll take a short break and reconvene outside for our Campfire Cooking Class where Sarah will teach us the four basic open-fire cooking techniques; baking, roasting, frying, and boiling to prepare an outdoor meal using the tools you made. While helping to prepare our meal, you’ll learn how to build a bad-ass cooking fire, tell temperature without a thermometer, and how to tell the doneness of food by using all of your senses.

6pm-7pm : We feast! Menu includes: (subject to variation)

- Spit Roasted Rabbit
- String Roasted Whole Chicken
- Roasted Squash, Cauliflower and Pineapple
- Rusks, a Buttery Fried Bread

This fun and informative full day of forging and feasting guarantees good times and enthusiastic hands-on instruction. As always, the things you make are the things you take - which means your new campfire cooking skills are sure to get you mad cred on your next outdoor adventure!

: Gavin Lehman has been forging custom ironwork for private residences and commercial establishments in the greater Cleveland area for over 23 years. The products of his studio and shop are almost exclusively custom, privately commissioned ironworks ranging from railing systems to drawer pulls and everything in between. In design and direction, his work is largely based upon exploring and harmonizing relationships. Gavin had previously taught blacksmithing classes at
Cleveland Institute of Art, Maker Mountain Studios, and in his private home studio. In 2017, he and his wife founded Cleveland Blacksmithing, a community-learning blacksmith shop open to all those interested in art, blacksmithing, and metalworking.

Campfire Cooking
: Sarah Lohman is a culinary historian, cooking instructor and the author of the bestselling and critically acclaimed book Eight Flavors: The Untold Story of American Cuisine. She focuses on the history of American food as a way to access stories of women, immigrants, and people of color, and to address issues of racism, sexism, and xenophobia. Her work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, as well as on All Things Considered; and she has presented across the country, from the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington, DC to The Culinary Historians of Southern California.
