Birmingham SHRM is now offering a SHRM Learning System study group to expand your human resource knowledge and prepare you for the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or the SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) exam. This group combines an experienced facilitator with the learning modules and online study tools of the 2016 SHRM Learning System to expand your human resource knowledge and skills and prepare you for the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or the SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) exam.

Our 8 instructor led sessions are designed for individuals interested in preparing for the SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP exam, achieving professional advancement and building confidence for addressing today’s human resource challenges.

This study group is based on the SHRM Learning System, a premier-quality exam preparation tool that combines learning modules available in print and e-reader formats and online resources, accessible via mobile devices, to teach the entire SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge™ (SHRM BoCK™).

Whether you are a SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP candidate or a manager seeking training for your staff, our SHRM Learning System study group can help you accomplish your certification and professional development goals.

Now, more than ever, HR teams are required to assume a greater leadership role, contributing to and advancing their organizations’ strategic direction. The SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP credentials recognize this trend and take a fresh and current look at what HR professionals need to know and how to put that knowledge to work. The certification program covers behavioral competencies and functional knowledge areas within the themes of HR Competencies, People, Organization, Workplace and Strategy. Attaining and maintaining my credential means I’ll be ready to take on new roles and responsibilities.

SHRM certification is the new standard for HR professionals around the globe, as it is among the first to focus on practical, real-life HR information, teaching and testing competencies and knowledge. When I prepare for the certification exam with the SHRM Learning System, I won’t be simply memorizing a textbook; I’ll be applying concepts, using behavioral judgment, and understanding best practices for handling day-to-day business as well as unexpected scenarios. I’ll be learning from the experiences of other HR professionals, sharpening my skills and boosting my productivity and effectiveness.

SHRM conducted global research including outreach to major corporations, universities and over 35,000 members of the profession worldwide. Based on its findings, SHRM determined that, in addition to technical knowledge, a successful HR career will also be determined by behavioral competencies—the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP include both of these essential elements. This credential will reflect what I need to know and how to apply it to be a leader in our organization. Growing the influence of HR leaders through certification is a worthwhile investment that also improves our reputation as an organization that takes HR seriously.

We live and work in a global economy, and my skills need to be globally applicable and accepted. Based on one single SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge, the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP credentials are relevant and applicable worldwide. Earning this credential will give me the recognition and flexibility to use my knowledge, skills and competencies anywhere our organization operates, now and in the future.

A: SHRM is committed to ensuring that the certification HR professionals achieve is best in class and distinguishes them in the marketplace. Therefore, SHRM determined that it was necessary to move forward independently with the development of a competency-based certification, which is urgently needed for the advancement of the HR profession and HR practitioners.

Q: What are the credentials?

A: The SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CPSM) and SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCPSM) are competency- and knowledge-based credentials that will be universally recognized.

Q: What is the foundation for the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP?

A: SHRM conducted an intensive research study to define the competencies and knowledge relevant to today's global HR professional. Through these efforts, a clear picture emerged of what is expected of future HR professionals and leaders. The SHRM Body of Competency & KnowledgeTM (SHRM BoCKTM)—designed to elevate the HR profession around the world—forms the foundation for SHRM certification.

Q: Who was involved in the research study?

A: SHRM certification is the culmination of over three years of research, and based on the SHRM Competency Model, which was validated by more than 35,000 HR professionals from 33 countries. These HR professionals identified the skills needed to grow and succeed in HR careers.

Q: What is the cost to take the exam?

A: The SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams are each $300 for SHRM members and $400 for nonmembers. (This price includes a $50 nonrefundable processing fee.) A $75 USD nonrefundable late application fee will be applied if you apply for the exam during the late application periods.

Q: How do I schedule my exam appointment?

A: The SHRM certification exams will be administered by computer by SHRM’s test delivery vendor, Prometric. Once your application is complete, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter via e-mail. This letter has the contact information for Prometric and your Eligibility ID that you will need when you contact Prometric to schedule your exam appointment.
