Edwin Hacking, instructor

1–4 pm, 4 Sundays: 9/10, 9/17, 10/8, 10/15, in Mary Harris Room

Why you want to take this class: Many of today’s cameras have lots of features and gadgets. This class will teach you which buttons, dials, and symbols are important and what they do, the ones that actually help you be creative and make powerful photographs. You will learn that it’s not always about technical know-how; instead it has to do with being able to see. Seeing with a photographer’s eye!

To do this you will learn the general rules of composition, like using leading lines to draw the viewer to key elements; the importance of shooting in a horizontal vs. a vertical format; how the use of framing draws attention to a particular part of your scene, and much more.

Class offered in September and October, 2 Sunday afternoons per month. We will meet for 3 hours and spend time going over the features of the camera. We will then go out on location to capture a chosen theme for the day.

Each class with have different topics. We will cover macro-photography, shooting flowers and plants, nature landscapes, slow-shutter speed photography, use of fill-flash, HDR or high dynamic range photography, how to shoot portraits, or a subject you request.

Camera: You can bring a simple point-and-shoot, or a DSLR camera.
