Event description

Description

How does faith inform the work of our civic, academic, and marketplace leaders? What faith-inspired lessons have our key leaders learned throughout their lives and how do they play out in the everyday demands of public engagement? Join us for our continuing Upper House series entitled, Faith in the Heart of the City.

Karen Menendez Coller has been executive director of Centro Hispano in Madison since 2013. She is a native of El Salvador, who came to California with her parents as a teen. After earning a degree in molecular and cell biology from the University of California at Berkeley, she lived in Zambia for a year at an HIV counseling and testing site. That experience changed her focus, prompting her to earn a master’s degree in public health from the University of Michigan. Karen worked for the Department of Public Health in Sacramento, California, then earned a Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore. She joined the research faculty at UCLA for four years before coming to Centro Hispano. Her husband, Ryan Coller, M.D., is a UW-Madison graduate from Green Bay. They are the parents of two children.

* Our event will be moderated by Phil Haslanger, a United Church of Christ minister and former managing editor at The Capital Times.
