Event description

Description

This four(4) week class will cover the basics of wheel throwing and ceramic skills. It is for the student that knows nothing or very little about ceramics or pottery and has the desire to learn about the art. It will add to one’s appreciation of pottery and can enhance the collector’s knowledge of the field. Students will create functional pottery forms such as cups, bowls, pitchers, and plates. This class is fun for anyone sixteen(16) years or older.

Objectives:

  • To provide a basic overview of the ceramic processes of wheel throwing, glazing and firing.
  • To provide students with the opportunity to create handmade pottery on the potter’s wheel. An artistic approach is emphasized.

Schedule:

Classes meet twice per week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:45pm-8:15pm for 4 weeks starting on 2/05/18. Direct instruction is given for 1.5 hours each class period. Students may chose to sign up with the Rec Center to have extra practice time outside of class time ($3/adult, $1/youth.) Practice time spent throwing outside of class time is highly encouraged and will enhance the learning and enjoyment of the throwing process.

A Raku Firing will take place the Saturday after the last lab class session. Location TBD.

Class size is limited to 3-4 students per instructor, 7 students per class total.

Course cost is $350 per participant with all supplies included (25# of clay, tools, glazes, and firings.) A $50 deposit is required at time of registration. If the entire cost is to be paid directly from school allottment, the $50 registration deposit will be refunded after the four week course payment has been received from school.

About the instructors: Karl Schaff has a degree in Ceramics and taught at Margal's studio in South Anchorage for over 12 years. Cynthia Hawkins has been a certified classroom teacher since 1996 and has been doing ceramics since 1980. Together we have over 30 years of teaching experience.

Location: "Fairview Pottery" will be renting the art lab at the Fairview Recreation Center--essentially a public lab outside of class time. Unfortunately, the rental cost of the lab and firing costs drives up the course cost, but once students learn how to use the equipment and how the work flow runs, they will be able to comfortably use the lab anytime outside of class time when the Rec center is open ($3/adult, $1/youth.) We are bringing in extra wheels and a slab roller for class participants to use.

Looking Forward: Perhaps a student/parent art guild of sorts will eventually develop.
