Fair Housing: Renters Rights & AmeriCorps Opportunities (Now Hiring)
Event Information
About this event
Do you know your rights as a renter? If you or someone you know were being discriminated against, would you know who to call? Come learn the answers to those two critical questions and about opportunities to join Housing Action Illinois' AmeriCorps Program.
The same workshop will be repeated three times, so choose which one works best for you.
Presenter Information: South Suburban Housing Center or HOPE Fair Housing Center will present the history of fair housing and your rights as renters. Towards the end of the workshop, Housing Action staff will share details about our AmeriCorps program and how to sign up to serve with organizations like SSHC and HOPE to advance their missions.
South Suburban Housing Center: South Suburban Housing Center is dedicated to the promotion of a unitary housing market that: eliminates discrimination based on race or other protected group status; and fosters stable, long-term diverse communities.
To achieve this purpose, SSHC operates a host of Fair Housing Enforcement, Housing Counseling and Education and Outreach programs throughout the communities in its primary south Chicago metropolitan service area, as well as other underserved areas throughout Illinois and northwest Indiana that seek our assistance.
HOPE Fair Housing Center: HOPE’s vision is housing opportunities for all members of our communities to rent or buy any home they can afford, thereby creating economically sound, vibrant neighborhoods.
HOPE Fair Housing Center works to create greater housing opportunities for all. We want to ensure everyone has the chance to live in the community/home/apartment of their choice free from discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, familial status, or any other characteristics protected under state or local laws. HOPE accomplishes this through education, outreach, enforcement, training, and advocacy.
Housing Action Illinois AmeriCorps Network: Housing Action Illinois manages a network of up to 30 full-year AmeriCorps Members and 30+ AmeriCorps Summer Associates placed with our member organizations around the state. These individuals are part of the AmeriCorps VISTA program, a national service program designed specifically to end poverty. Our AmeriCorps Members and Summer Associates fill a wide variety of roles, but all are aimed at helping our communities thrive.
