Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail: Planning and Designing for Flood Risk
Event Information
Description
This is a talk delivered by Argyll Environmental, with guest speaker Ed Barsley, to talk about both designing and planning for flood risk. This talk will be aimed at both architects and developers.
Guest speaker Ed Barsley (From; The Environmental Design Studio) will introduce the key principles of designing for flood resilience. He will discuss the various types of flooding that can occur and will explain the range of tools and techniques available for understanding flood risk contexts. Strategies for adaptation and resilience will also be discussed at catchment, community and building scale in relation to both new and existing buildings. The other topics covered in this talk by Ed will include:
- Flood risk contexts: impacts at the global, national and community scale
- Types of flooding: the causes, impacts and relevant strategies
- Tools and techniques for understanding flood risk and resilience: key principles and resources
- Flood risk management: traditional and contemporary approaches, both inland and coastal
- Community level strategies: Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS), street level strategies
- Property level strategies: resistance and resilience measures for both new build and existing buildings
- Reflections on the pathway to a resilient future: opportunities and barriers to change
Following on from Ed's talk, Argyll will discuss the various types of Flood Risk Assessments that we offer, as well as other planning and desktop services. We will cover the following points:
- The background and purpose of Flood Risk Planning Policy, and why it’s important for architects and developers
- When FRA’s are required, why do you need an FRA and Sequential and Exception Testing
- What FRAs Include, accounting for climate change and likely recommendations
- Argyll’s other planning services and useful reports for developers and architects.
There will be time for drinks and networking after the event. We look forward to meeting you.
