 Treating Medically Complex Patients 

Course Summary: Patient populations are generally becoming more medically complex due to many factors.  While some medically complex patients require specialty care, many can be managed in the standard clinical environment with minor accommodations.  Patients with complex medical histories require attention to detail when taking histories and formulating treatment plans.

Course PresenterDr. Brent Hutson, Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Restorative Sciences. 

Dr. Brent Hutson received a bachelor of science in biology from Texas Tech University in 1989.  He received a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Baylor College of Dentistry in 1993 and a Master of Science in Health Professions Education in 2005 from the Texas A&M Health Science Center. Dr. Hutson affiliated with the US Navy Dental Corps in 1993 and currently serves with the US Navy reserves as Captain, Expeditionary Medical Facility Dallas One at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Ft. Worth, Texas. 

Dr. Hutson is an associate professor of clinical dentistry at the Texas A&M College of Dentistry and has a hospital based dental practice at Baylor University Medical Center Dallas, Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center.  He is an attending clinician at Baylor University Medical Center and the Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center in Dallas, Texas.

 Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation the provider will be able to:

  • Recognize the most common medical comorbidities requiring modification of dental treatment modalities
  • Safely treat a larger patient population and be better informed about when to refer for specialty care

Continuing education credits issued for  participation in the CE activity may not apply toward license renewal in all  states/provinces. It is the responsibility of each participant to verify the  requirements of his/her state/provincial licensing board(s).

REGISTRATION CANCELLATION:Tuition is refundable if a course is canceled by  the Office of CE. A $50 fee will be assessed for any course  cancellation.  All payments by check or cash are deposited into the Texas A&M account  and CANNOT be refunded. “No Shows” for a course  forfeit all tuition. Confirm notification of cancellation by e-mail.The CE Office cannot be held responsible for a  non-refundable airline ticket.
