Event description

Description

Join Giovanni de Faccio and Ink.Academy for a long weekend of Frakturs. Giovanni will start from the very beginning, making sure you lay the perfect groundwork for these beautiful letters. Over the course of three days, you will practice and learn the depth of one of Europe's most treasured Scripts.

The evolution of the Gothic writings, including in the period between 1300 and 1600, is rich in various forms, now slow and heavy then fast and light or static and dynamic. The common characteristic remains, however, the broken form of the letter o. We will begin with an accurate study of the classic Textur, the basic scaffold of broken scriptures, to follow with an in-depth study that will allow us to understand the morphological development of the Gothic letter. The typical decorative and expressive forms of Fraktur will eventually be tackled in order to make personal designs of the original ideas. It is an opportunity to discover not only the fascination of writing ancient forms but also of living in the first person that somewhat magical atmosphere of calligraphy.

The classes will be from 10.00am to 6pm, with a one hour lunch break.

This workshop is open to both beginners and advanced calligraphers alike.

Giovanni de Faccio

Giovanni de Faccio, born in 1966, is Italian but lives in Austria. He is a professional calligrapher since 1990 and in 1991 he was one of the founders of the first modern Italian Calligraphic Association for which he is still leading specialized courses. On international level he is known as teacher and for the effort he dedicated to subjects such as the "way of writing by hand" and typography. He drew digital characters, the most notable is the Rialto.df. In 1999 he was honored by Günter Gerhard Lange for the German association "Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen" by recognizing "High quality design" and in 2002 he won the competition of the "Type Directors Club" in the category type system. He took part at international exhibitions and published various articles and books as "Better writing" or the manual "Calligraphy". For over five years he was engaged with the project "Litterae", a manuscript on parchment using a quill pen, and mineral and vegetable pigments prepared at home according to ancient recipes. He is also letter cutter on stone and teaches calligraphy and type-design at the New Design University in St. Poelten, Austria.

His motto is: Stop to write with your head, write now with your heart.

Fraktur

Fraktur is a calligraphic hand of the Latin alphabet and any of several blackletter typefaces derived from this hand. The blackletter lines are broken up; that is, their forms contain many angles when compared to the smooth curves of the Antiqua (common) typefaces modeled after antique Roman square capitals and Carolingian minuscule. From this, Fraktur is sometimes contrasted with the "Latin alphabet" in northern European texts, which is sometimes called the "German alphabet", simply being a typeface of the Latin alphabet. Similarly, the term "Fraktur" or "Gothic" is sometimes applied to all of the blackletter typefaces (known in German as Gebrochene Schrift, "Broken Script").
