Event description

Description

Mass timber is quickly becoming the preferred building method for many architects, engineers, contractors and developers across the country. According to WoodWorks, more than 400 mass timber buildings are in design or have been built in the past few years, including at least 37 in Oregon. With its unique ability to help fight climate change by storing atmospheric carbon, mass timber, also referred to as “CLT” (for cross-laminated timber), holds great promise for the future. It also offers a means toward forest-health restoration and rural economic revitalization. Fulfilling those promises will require a collaborative effort on the part of many stakeholders, ranging from forest resource managers to real estate developers.

On Friday, October 19, the Oregon Forest Resources Institute (OFRI) board of directors will host a fact-finding mission to help elected officials and other key policy influencers better understand the links between forest management and the emerging mass timber market. During the day-long event, participants will visit a research forest to see and learn about silviculture treatments designed to address social values as well as the need for timber resources. The group will hear a panel discussion about forest collaborative groups and the “good neighbor authority.” And the group will visit the new Peavy Hall, which is being constructed on the Oregon State University campus using CLT produced in Oregon.

An optional evening reception on Thursday, October 18, will offer the chance to hear from a Portland developer and learn his perspective on this new building trend.

The Ethics Commission has approved making the fact-finding mission available to all Oregon legislators, including meals, lodging, parking and travel on the bus. The event has also been sanctioned by the Secretary of the Senate and the Chief Clerk of the House. OFRI will furnish copies of these approvals to all registrants for whom they apply.

The tour begins at 9:30 a.m. Friday with check-in at the Hilton Garden Inn in Corvallis, where free parking is available. The chartered tour bus will return to the Garden Inn at approximately 2:30 p.m. The optional reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Adair Village, about a 15-minute drive from the hotel.

On behalf of the OFRI board, I hope you will take the time to join us on this fact-finding mission. If you have any questions about the registration process, please contact Kathy Storm: Storm@OFRI.org or 971-673-2953.
