Event description
Learn about facing life's last chapters and supports and strategies for end of life planning.

About this Event

Talking with a family member, partner, or other loved one about aging and dying is a difficult but critical conversation. As painful and frightening as it will likely be, it is essential for parents, children, and other supporters and caregivers to be ready to discuss what matters most in the later chapters of life. It is especially important to address these topics sooner, rather than later for a variety of reasons, including that it will provide each of you an opportunity to share this final transition.

Taught by Libby Bortz and Patty Bortz, a mother-daughter team with first-hand experience and professional expertise, this course is designed for anyone looking for guidance on end-of-life conversations, planning, and support. Learn best practices for starting and continuing this challenging conversation, discuss the topics to include, and gather resources for end of life planning. Examine the emotional experiences of both aging and caregiving, and explore research and statistics around aging. Students will engage in interactive practice, feedback, and idea generation as it relates to the conversation around aging. Come away with not only a better understanding of what this discussion might entail but also perhaps a greater sense of peace about your role in it.

Learning Objectives

  • Examine the importance of early communication with family, partners, and other supportive persons about aging, dying, and what matters most in the later chapters of life.
  • Analyze a variety of approaches for initiating the conversation where there is reluctance and avoidance.
  • Develop awareness of topics and issues to include in the aging conversation.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of emotional aging.
