Description

Facilitation is one of the most important skills for effective leaders, and one that everyone talks about but very few can do effectively. In this one and one half day workshop, you’ll learn and implement proven techniques to help you maintain control, facilitate group process and produce results.

  • Learn and apply key techniques for effectively facilitating team and project meetings
  • Discuss and identify the key characteristics of good facilitation
  • Implement facilitation process skills that make group work more productive
  • Use brainstorming, problem-solving and decision-making techniques effectively
  • Explore and practice the tactics of meeting facilitation: planning, climate setting, setting ground rules, etc.

DAY 1:

  • Understanding Facilitation
  • Process vs. Content
  • Laying the Groundwork
  • Building Consensus
  • Reaching a Decision Point
  • Dealing with Difficult People
  • Addressing Group Dysfunction
  • Preparation for Day 2 and Team Assignments

DAY 2

  • Putting the skills into Practice
  • Assign participants to groups, and designate key roles to participants to allow them to practice applying skills for addressing challenges while facilitating.
  • Participants will serve as coaches and provide feedback on use of techniques during practice.
  • Wrapping Up
  • Assignment of Learning/Accountability Partners to assist with continued peer coaching and networking
  • Completion of Action Plans

This is an intensive one and one half day workshop. You will be expected to stay the night and work with your assigned group that evening to develop a facilitated session for the second day. There will be evening group work/homework. Participants are responsible for hotel and transportation costs for the one night, all meals included. Speaker Information

Dr. Marc Hoit is the Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and CIO at NC State University arriving in 2008. Hoit held numerous administrative positions at the University of Florida including: Interim CIO, Director of Student PeopleSoft Implementation, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Administration and Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering. He is a Professor in the Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering Department at NC State. Hoit received his B.S. from Purdue University, M.S. and Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Hoit is the Co-Principal Investigator for the Department of Homeland Security: NCB-Prepared Grant, with UNC Chapel Hill and SAS, which is developing early warning systems for health security using big data. He was the PI for DIGGS, an international standard XML schema for transferring transportation information and data, funded by the Federal Highway Association.

Sarah Hoit describes her job as being a translator between the worlds of science and design. For the previous 5 years she has worked at the world’s leading material sourcing company as a Senior Material Scientist; specifying materials, engaging manufacturing partners, and selecting applicable production methods. Having worked on products ranging from bluetooth speakers and cosmetics to running shoes and credit cards, breadth of material knowledge and bringing fresh thinking to the table have earned her experience with Global Fortune 500 clients. Facilitation provides the opportunity to leverage interpersonal skills and technical knowledge to support cross-platform and cross-team collaboration.

Tina Bennefield currently serves as a Learning & Organizational Development Senior Consultant within the Department of Learning & Organizational Development at NC State University. She brings more than 20 years of experience in facilitation from within both the public and private sectors, that includes large scale strategic planning and change initiatives, and process improvement, decision-making, problem-solving and team development. Tina holds a Master's degree in Educational Leadership from the University of San Diego and a Bachelor's degree from California State University, Sacramento.
