Description

Parenting children from hard places can be challenging even with the best intentions. Understanding trauma and the impact it has on foster and adopted children can provide the tools necessary to begin the healing process. During the past 14 years, research conducted by the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development has expanded our understanding of the complex needs of children who have experienced abuse, neglect, and/or trauma. Current research studies aim to advance scientific knowledge regarding the impact of early maltreatment, as well as to develop trauma-informed interventions that encourage healthy social development.

The Family Healing Series features monthly two-hour video & discussion that cover the central themes and patterns found to be helpful in parenting children from hard places. Each workshop is a bite-sized, stand-alone experience allowing participants to arrive without pre-requisites and dive into the area(s) that most compel them.

This week we will be watching and discussing the video:

Facilitating Behavioral Change (85 minutes)

Tragically, children with histories of abuse, neglect, or trauma have often lost the ability to trust loving adults. Because of their difficult backgrounds, these children are more likely to display confusing, fear-driven behaviors that are often mistaken for aggression or mental illness. In this presentation, Dr. Karyn Purvis explores the Connecting and Correcting Principles of Trust-Based Relational Intervention® and provides practical insights on how to use TBRI® Tactics in real-life situations
