Event description

Description

Open to researchers, patients and members of the public interested in keeping up to date with advances in arthritis and rheumatic disease research in Ireland.

This conference is aimed at building a strong, enabling environment for Irish health researchers in the area of arthritis and rheumatic disease. The conference is designed to initiate a more holistic approach to disease, to bring together multidisciplinary researchers with the aim of supporting interdisciplinary research and encouraging public involvement in research. The entire conference will be accessible to the public with all speakers conducting their presentations in Plain English.

Session 1: Bench-to-Bedside

This session is aimed at highlighting the role that basic, translational and clinical research all have to play in successful and innovative health research.

Session 2: Allied Health Research

This session is aimed at highlighting the role of the wider rheumatic disease research disciplines, with a view to fostering interdisciplinary relationships with the researchers in the session 1 research areas.

Workshops:

1) Involving Patients in Research

Designed for researchers. Delivered by Arthritis Research UK.

This workshop is aims of to raise awareness about the benefits of patient involvement; to help researchers think about how to involve patients and carers, so that involvement can make a valuable contribution to their work and to understand the importance of communicating effectively with patients and the public.

2) Introduction to the Research Cycle

Designed for the public.

This workshop is aimed at explaining the funding and research cycle to patients and the public. This workshop is being developed directly in response to queries from our patient insight partners. This workshop will introduce the patients and the public to the research cycle, highlighting potential routes for involvement and provide insight into the mechanics of health research so that the public can make more informed decisions about engaging and becoming involved in research.

3) Communications

Designed for all delegates

This workshop is designed to improve communication between patients and researchers. It is custom designed and delivered specifically for this conference by Patient Insight Partners from the UCD patient involvement in research initiatives called The Patient Voice.

Keynote Address

Dr. Stephen Simpson, ARUK

Dr. Stephen Simpson is the Director of Research at Arthritis Research UK (ARUK) and former director of Life Sciences at Science Foundation Ireland. Dr. Simpson is uniquely positioned as he understands both the Irish research funding and policy landscape and has developed research strategy, policy and supports through ARUK with the aim of maximising impact for people with arthritis as rapidly as possible. Two of the key principles of ARUKs arthritis research strategy are to facilitate collaboration when needed and involve people living with arthritis in all stages of the research assessment process. Dr. Simpson will provide us with real world experience and insight into how to achieve this goal.

A full programme will be available at http://www.ucd.ie/car/ from August.

This conference is funded by the Health Research Board.
