Event description

Description

Join us for our Teach-In series featuring a screening Basil Dearden’s The Victim followed by a discussion with Nick Davis.

The Film: Dirk Bogarde delivers a stunning performance as a young barrister offered the opportunity to become a Queen’s Counselor, who faces blackmailers intent on outing him. Though never explicit, The Victim peels the mask off the system which forced so many to keep their sexual orientation a secret. Roger Ebert called it “a film of courage.” Banned in the U.S., The Victim is both a character study and a thriller and was an enormous risk for Bogarde who suffered career consequences for daring to play a homosexual.

The Speaker: Nick Davis, Ph.D., the author of Desiring Image: Gilles Deleuze and Contemporary Queer Cinema,is Associate Professor of English at Northwestern University, writes broadly on films, and teaches queer theory, feminist and gender studies, and American literature.
