Event description

Description

Join us for our Teach-In series featuring a screening Tony Gatlif’s Latcho Drom followed by a discussion with Tony Gatlif.

The Film: A unique film with music and virtually no dialogue, Latcho Drom follows the journey of the Romani people from north-west India to Spain. As they travel through Egypt, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and France, the movie ecstatically portrays the Gypsy experience, in a film which shows how music can preserve and keep alive an ostracized culture, a film “that the Roms could be proud of, that wouldn’t make a sideshow of their misery…a song of praise to the people I love.”

The Speaker: Marguerite Horberg is the founder of the HotHouse, Studio V, and The Salon of Modalisque, an artist, entrepreneur, social justice activist, who has established numerous platforms for international cultural exchange including the debut Chicago World Music Festival, the Chicago Flamenco Festival, Jazz en Clove and Jazz Without Borders.
