Event description
Learn how to weld and take away up to three book stands for the reader or avid cook in your life.

About this Event

About the Class

In this class, participants will get a brief MIG welding introduction with some basic fabrication how-to's and build simple book stands using mild steel round stock and learning how to construct their own hairpin legs. Participants will be able to make and take home up to three stands.

What to Expect

Come ready to learn about welding, fabrication, how to use tools like a bandsaw, fiber saw, angle grinder, and learn how to set-up and use a wire-feed welding machine! We'll spend our first hour welding and getting used to how it sounds, what to look for, and how to choose appropriate settings.

You will be able to construct up to three different book stands. We will cover finishing techniques including rust patinas, simple spray paints, and clear coats. These will help preserve your book stands and protect them from rust (unless that's what you're going for)!

What to Bring

The Hack Factory provides gloves, welding hoods, safety glasses, ear protection, and welding jackets. It's recommended that if you have gloves you like, bring them! Our supply is there and available but may not fit your hands as well as you'd like. Please bring whatever you need to make yourself comfortable. This includes food and water bottles!

Importantly, please wear closed-toed shoes and if possible, 100% wool or cotton clothing. Jeans definitely work! Try to avoid clothing that has a high percentage of nylon, polyester, or other synthetic fibers.

The Space

The Hack Factory is a maker space that has a wonderful array of tools, machines, and humans that have a great amount of knowledge! Classes are open to members and non-members.

For accessibility knowledge, all the floors are concrete. There are three shallow steps to the front door and then two more steps up into the main shop. There is water and a soda machine available. There isn't any refrigeration for food items so if you're planning on bringing a snack, be aware! There is a microwave however, so plan accordingly for yourself!

About the Instructor

Cory Gabrielle has an associates degree in Welding Technology from MCTC and has been working as a welder for the past three years at a local production fabrication shop in Seward. They love trying to make welding and creating as accessible as possible, and finding new ways to share knowledge. They're currently in school to add HVAC technician to their skill list but hope to join the Pipefitters union as a welder in the very near future! They also host the monthly Wench Welding group for people who identify as Femme/Trans/Women.
